HEALTH CONTROLS

The primary reason for Turkey’s lack of success in sports is the absence of regular health controls based on a knowledge of sports medicine.

Before participating in any sport, a general medical examination and fitness tests should be carried out. The appropriate fitness tests, muscle strength and endurance measurements, as well as anthropometric measurements, should be made, depending on the sport. For professionals, pre-competition fitness controls should be made, tests should be carried out and sport injuries should be treated and controlled.

Children who want to start a sport for the first time, should be assessed to determine whether they have any genetic or congenital condition. Any illnesses the child has had to date should be established.

Studies should be conducted to understand whether the child has any illness that could prevent or impede their participation in sport.

General medical examinations and laboratory tests are carried out to determine these conditions. In addition, body measurements should be taken to decide which sports are the most appropriate. Only after these preliminary examinations should they have the fitness tests.

During the fitness tests, the cardiovascular system and respiratory system controls should be made and reaction times should be examined, as well as blood analyses. The reaction of the heart, together with changes in blood pressure, should be measured with a cardio stress test using a stationary bike (spin bike) or treadmill. When required, maximum oxygen consumption should be determined and a decision should be made on the athlete’s physical condition. Missing parameters should be determined. The resulting data should be communicated to the trainer. After this stage, the trainer and the sports physician should work together. When the trainer has developed the athlete’s fitness, the training program can be implemented according to the examination and investigative results of the sports physician. The impact of the training on the athlete’s physical condition shall be determined with a second fitness test, which will determine the efficiency of the training program.

These fitness tests are being carried out at Istanbul University’s Sports Physiology and Application Center and the results are being examined with the trainers. This contributes to the general health of our athletes as well as to their success in sports. To give an example of the tests, which have been carried out in this center for many years; we determined from the controls that the lung capacity of the 9-15 age group were not improving. As a result of the evaluations made with the trainers, it was therefore decided to specifically include muscle exercises that would develop lung capacity. As a result, an increase in lung capacity, as well as in the performances of the athletes, has been achieved. In yet another example, the throat culture screenings from our swimmers revealed cases of beta hemolytic streptococcus in some athletes.

The athletes received treatment to prevent them from contracting endocarditis, nephritis and rheumatism. Hemoglobin levels and red blood cell counts have been found to be low in many athletes. With dietary measures and medication, these indicators have returned to normal levels. As a result of the tests, the appropriate examinations have been made on athletes who were suspected of having parasites. Those who were found to have parasites were given the necessary treatment. As a result of these medical evaluations, which are far too numerous to mention, many athletes have benefited from these services.

As a result of being able to benefit from the opportunities provided by modern science, we can not only improve our sporting performance, we are also able to protect our health.
